What I Didn't Know Before Joining

Five Things I’ve Learned Since Joining Impact 100 Gulf Coast

When I became a member of Impact100 Gulf Coast, I knew the basics: 100 women giving $1,000 each that would award $100,000 grants that would make a transformational impact in our community.

In just two years, our members have awarded $500,000 in grants to local nonprofits. Half a million dollars. That’s impressive on its own. But what has surprised me most is what happens behind the scenes.

I didn’t know how rigorous the grant process would be.

Like many people, I assumed there would be a thoughtful review process. What I didn’t expect was the extraordinary level of due diligence, oversight, and accountability. Our volunteers invest countless hours reviewing applications, conducting site visits, asking difficult questions, and ensuring that every grant dollar is awarded responsibly. The process is thorough, transparent, and inspires tremendous confidence in the final decisions.

I didn’t know how many incredible nonprofits serve our community.

I have learned about organizations I had never heard of before—organizations quietly doing life-changing work for our neighbors. Their missions are diverse, their needs are real, and their impact is measurable. Reviewing grant applications has opened my eyes to the depth of service happening throughout our six-county service area.

I didn’t know how supportive the nonprofit community would be.

One of the most inspiring surprises has been watching nonprofits cheer for one another. Of course they want to receive funding, but there is also a genuine spirit of collaboration. In our community, there is a real understanding that when one organization succeeds, the entire community benefits. It truly feels like a “rising tide lifts all boats” environment.

I didn’t know how much work goes into making it look effortless.

As a member, it’s easy to see the planned events, the grant announcements, and the celebrations. What many don’t see are the hundreds of volunteer hours that make it all possible. From membership recruitment to grant review committees to event planning and communications, dedicated women work year-round to ensure Impact100 Gulf Coast fulfills its mission.

Most of all, I didn’t know how powerful collective giving could feel.

Writing a $1,000 check is meaningful. Joining with hundreds of other women to create transformational grants is something entirely different. It turns individual generosity into community-changing impact.

What I have learned is that Impact100 Gulf Coast is about much more than writing checks. It’s about learning, connecting, collaborating, and investing in the future of our community.

And the best part? We’re just getting started.

Every new member increases our impact. Every new member helps us award more grants. Every new member helps us change more lives.

I can’t wait to see what we accomplish together next.
